Questions You Might Ask About Our Church

WHAT CAN I EXPECT AT YOUR CHURCH SERVICE?

Our service is a mix of traditional and contemporary styles. It includes traditional hymns and contemporary choruses, scripture, prayers, a sermon and sharing of joys and concerns. The service lasts 60-70 minutes. Our 15 member choir presents special music each Sunday. A Children's Time is part of our service when children come to the front of the sanctuary and are actively engaged in a short lesson. Immediately following the service, our coffee time provides an opportunity for fellowship of all ages. Juice, cookies and coffee are shared with conversation and hospitality. Communion is usually served the first Sunday of each month during the service.

MAY I TAKE COMMUNION?

Absolutely! United Methodists practice an "open" Communion table, which means we welcome all who love Christ, repent of their sin, and seek to live in peace with one another. It is the Lord's Supper, not ours, and it is Christ who issues the invitation, not us. We do not refuse Holy Communion to any who wants to receive it.

DO I HAVE TO JOIN THE CHURCH?

No, you do not have to join our church to be part of our congregation and worship with us.

WHAT IF I WANT TO JOIN?

Our congregation is theologically, racially, economically, and politically diverse, and hopes to remain that way. We would love for you to join us, bringing with you all the unique gifts and graces God has placed within you! Joining the Yellow Springs United Methodist Church begins simply by letting the pastor or a member of the congregation know you are contemplating membership. The first step will be to sit down with the pastor to discuss what it means to be a United Methodist (including some discussion of United Methodist history, and theology). The pastor will also discuss some of the opportunities Y.S. UMC members have to be involved in mission and ministry with and to those in this congregation, in Yellow Springs, in the surrounding communities, and throughout the world. If you decide you wish to join, you will meet again with the pastor and later, with a member of the congregation who will be available to help you become familiar with our congregation, and denominational practices. Individuals joining our congregation may be baptized (for those who have not been baptized previously).

Those who have been baptized may join:
(a)By transfer of membership from another denomination
(b)By transfer of membership from another congregation of the United Methodist Church
(c)By a profession of your faith

When more than one person seeks to join us, a New Members class will be held at the convenience of the new members and the pastor.

IS THERE A DRESS CODE?

No! Dress comfortably. Our diverse congregation wears anything from typical "church clothes" to jeans and sweat shirts. We are not concerned with outward appearances.

WHAT ABOUT CHILDCARE?

We have a "cry room" on the 2nd floor with audio of the service and a large viewing window to see the service. There are toys for toddlers, a crib and rocking chairs. This room is for parents and children 5 and under. Children of all ages are welcome in our service.

ARE YOU HANDICAPPED ACCESSIBLE?

Yes. We have easy access to our sanctuary from the street, a handicap parking area on Winter Street in front of the church, and handicap bathrooms. An elevator gives access to the Sunday school rooms, church office and basement fellowship hall.

CAN I USE MY MUSICAL TALENT?

Yes! Our choir is open to all who love to sing. No audition is required. We also welcome individuals to share instrumental or vocal solos.
